Dan Kanach Lecture

Updated: Dec 29, 2023

I really appreciated his analogy of the watering cans, the first very practical one and the second one by Katerina Kamprani that "makes you think" more deeply. I liked how he discussed his own style and how it differed from others. I thought it was interesting how he discussed his own path into art, from college where he majored in English then double majored in art because he had taken enough art classes to do that. After that, he worked as Randolf Macon's women's lacrosse coach and that really limited his free time, which I totally understand because of how constraining track meets are along with track practice. His reference to the horrors of Comic Sans really resonated with me because people don't seem to understand how atrocious it is. I appreciated him making a point that it's difficult to become a designer or artist if you don't put your art out in the world. I felt like he did a really good job of making himself seem relatable because he argued that he wasn't the best artist when he won any of his contests, but his willingness to try was what made him successful. I liked the humor that he threw into his animations to make his job a little more fun. He seems like he really enjoys graphic design which is nice to hear because a lot of people don't seem to enjoy their jobs, so it really demonstrates that not all jobs have to be boring.
