Figure Drawing Reflection

I think the two weeks of figure drawing we did helped me improve my figure drawing skills and also helped to reinforce the fact that figure drawing will not be something I pursue in the future. Throughout the process, I struggled to capture the movement of the figures and the proportion of the figure. My gesture drawings were fairly inconsistent each day and depended almost entirely on what charcoal pencil I was using that day, which I found really interesting. It emphasized the importance of choosing appropriate tools for the project you're engaged in. Although I struggled technically, I did enjoy trying to capture the 3 dimensional aspects of a live model, almost in a cubist way by layering different parts of the figure that would be unseen if looking at the figure from only one perspective. It helped to add motion to the figure and make the drawing more recognizable when I was trying to finish it in such a short period of time. My goal following the last few weeks is to be braver in my art, not necessarily with subject but with what parts of the drawing I approach first, because almost every time we did longer studies of the model, my drawings would end up without a completed face. Although this lesson won't be directly applicable to my future work because I'm going to try to avoid figure drawing, I think it will certainly be relevant to pieces with more detailed or important aspects.
